Protective intelligence is a proactive method of identifying, evaluating, and reducing potential threats to a person or organization. It's a type of threat assessment that's part of executive protection.

How it works

  • Gather information

Investigators collect information and evidence about a person or group that may pose a threat. Our signature process includes proactive research on potential problems and target individuals, not only known individuals but unknown individuals or groups that we may foresee a problem with. We hone in on such potential bad actors with persistent monitoring. Our persistent monitoring can be from our Security Agents in the field, Covert Personnel we have in the field or through our Street Sources of information.

  • Assess the threat

Investigators use investigative skills to evaluate the threat and the individual's motives.

  • Develop a plan

Investigators create a plan to monitor the individual and intervene to prevent an attack.

We call this Threat Mitigation. Prior to conducting an interception or intervention on the person(s) or groups in question, we conduct meticulous planning on our approach to ensure safety for all.

When it's used:

  • Protective intelligence is used to protect individuals and organizations from threats like criminal threats, extremist propaganda, and exposure of sensitive information. It is a significant part of the threat assessment process.

  • It's used to protect high-profile individuals, executives and events, such as politicians, celebrities, and sporting events.

Who uses it? Law enforcement agencies, Security agencies, and The Secret Service and Diplomatic Security Service.

The importance of Protective Intelligence on each Executive Protection Detail:

Protective Intelligence on each protection detail is crucial and provides vital information to the executive protection team throughout the detail or continuously should it be a long term detail. Some of this vital information can be threats made (verbal, online etc..) about your client, very similar to that of what seen recently with the murder of United Healthcare CEO in December of 2024. Many of these threats are from known or unknown bad actors, each gives us the insight to heighten our awareness and procedures with our client. Continual monitoring can give the protection team the proper notice they need to make an adjustment of their protection.

Additional considerations should be given to the location that your protectee will be visiting or working from. This is important in many urban centers as street crime maybe more likely to occur. Knowing that threat landscape is extremely beneficial and can assist executive protection team with making sound decisions regarding their route planning. Should you learn that there is a certain hot spot near your clients visit, you can definitely plan your route to avoid that area. There are also plenty of apps that can assist you with this type of real time information to better protect the client. (Citizen app, Crime Local app, Dataminr app, Local radio news etc..)

Weather as a threat and is part of the protective intelligence process. Threats are man-made (human) and natural (weather). Weather can pose a significant threat to your client as well. It could effect travel plans due to a storm or even worse, you could be stuck in the middle of a major storm. Continual monitoring of the local weather or the weather of the location you're traveling will be beneficial to the success of the protection detail. Your protective intelligence analysts can monitor this simply through apps like the weather channel, AccuWeather or visiting their websites.

Lastly, should your executive protection detail be operating on a shoe string budget without a protective intelligence team supporting it, you as the solo protector or executive protection team can make protective intelligence work. As a solo agent it's difficult, however during any moment of downtime you should be applying some of the protective intelligence concepts into action. When we have a small team protection detail, our Agent in Charge will assign each team member a protective intelligence task to divide up the workload. By doing this, it gives each team member ownership in the protective intelligence process. Our preferred method is with the dedicated protective intelligence analytical team.
